It comes from the word "chunk" or "chunky" which can be a term used to describe animals that are a bit heavier than average. It's even used as a hashtag on social media to tag cats that are ridiculously cute, but have a couple extra pounds. #chonk
Who was the first Chonk Cat?
While it's impossible to know the exact origin of the term "Chonk Cat", there is a bit of internet lore worth exploring.
We think that the term comes from the viral Feline Chonk Chart meme from 2018. The scale at that time ranged from a "Hefty Chonk" to an "Oh Lawd He Comin!" The meme has gone through some updates over the years and is always a classic.
There's even a popular Facebook group called "This cat is chonky" that has almost 1 million members sharing pictures and videos of cute, but rotund cats.
